This tahini hot chocolate goes under the guise of many names in my house hold- ceremonial cacao, hot choccie elixir, healing hot cacao or medicinal cacao. It’s each and all of those things, and is the most delicious drink to warms the bones come Winter.

Then, optional extras you might like to include;

  • Grass-fed gelatin. I use this one here and love adding it my hot drinks. It is TOTALLY optional, but a wonderful git-healing addition that also happenes to be tasteless and flavourless. 
  • Medicinal herbs or medicinal mushrooms of choice. I encourage you to explore what each herb or mushroom is used for to find the right fit for you, but some of my favourites include reishi, chaga, tremella, lions mane, maca and ashwaghandha.

The thickest, creamiest and most delicious paleo tahini hot chocolate that is boosted with ceremonial cacao and your choice of medicinal herbs. A wonderful, nutrient-rich warming hot chocolate that is GOOD for you.



  • 250ml milk of choice (raw milk, cows milk, nut milk)
  • 2 tsp grass-fed gelatin- optional
  • 15g ceremonial cacao OR 20g 70-90% dark chocolate (see notes)
  • 7g/ 2 tsp/4 buttons cacao butter
  • 1 Tbsp hulled tahini
  • 1 Tbsp raw cacao powder
  • 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp+ pure maple syrup or coconut sugar (see notes for sugar free option)
  • Optional extras- 1/2 tsp of your choice of powdered hers. I have used maca, lions mane, reishi, tremella, chaga and ashwaghandha and they all work wonderfully.


  1. Add milk to a saucepan and, if using, sprinkle gelatin over the top and set aside for 2 minutes. Add the remaining ingredients, excluding the optional herbs, and place over low heat.
  2. Heat until the mixture reaches around 60 C (140 F), whisking the whole time. If you don’t have a thermometer 60 C (140 F) will be the point where everything has melted completely, the mixture has thickened and a few small bubbles are forming at the sides of the pot. Avoid getting the milk to boiling point, or to the point where it starts to steam- the milk begins to scorch here and alters the flavour. Keeping the milk to 60 C will also help to preserve all the wonderful antioxidants present in the cacao, adding extra medicinal benefits.
  3. Remove from heat add add in any optional extras, whisking through. Now use a tea spoon to taste the mixture- hot chocolate, and chocolate in general, is a very personal thing. You might like your drink much sweeter than I do so add extra sweetener if needed.
  4. Pour into a cup and then immediately choose a gorgeous spot to sit, slow down and enjoy your very soothing. medicinal tahini hot chocolate.


Ceremonial cacao should be enjoyed in moderation if you are consuming it as a daily drink. It is recommended the tyou being with a low dose (15-20g) per cup, and only increase this if you need/want it stronger (up to 30g). A ceremonial dose is much stronger than this, but this drink is not designed for that.

For a sugar free version I recommend using pure monk fruit extract to taste, or simply omitting sweetener if you enjoy bitter beverages.
